DAVIDsTEA Issues Recall for Herbal Infusion due to Undisclosed Allergen

DAVIDsTEA Issues Recall for Herbal Infusion due to Undisclosed Allergen

Post by : Shweta

Canadian tea brand DAVIDsTEA has issued a recall for its herbal tea product after health officials uncovered an undeclared allergen within the blend. Consumers are advised against consuming the affected tea, which may contain almond, a component not mentioned on the packaging. This recall was prompted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), following concerns that the hidden allergen could provoke severe allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

The recalled item is the “Organic Sneeze Ease Herbal Infusion,” primarily sold through online channels across Canada. According to CFIA reports, the tea may include almond, a known tree nut allergen that poses risks to those with allergies. The lack of declaration regarding this ingredient presents a health hazard, as unaware consumers might believe the tea is safe to drink.

Officials have pinpointed the affected product as a 50-gram loose-leaf tea bag marked with UPC number 101202100502 and code 000CHA831216. The CFIA has categorized this situation as a serious food recall, urging customers to halt any use of the product immediately. Rather than consuming, selling, or serving the tea, customers should dispose of it or return it to the retailer.

Health professionals warn that allergic responses to tree nuts can range from subtle reactions to critical emergencies. Individuals with almond allergies might experience symptoms such as swelling, difficulty breathing, skin reactions, or severe anaphylactic shock following ingestion of the tea. Due to these potential dangers, Canadian food labels must prominently display common allergens so that consumers can make informed decisions.

The CFIA has stated that a food safety investigation is ongoing regarding the recalled product. This inquiry could result in more recalls if further affected items are found in the market. As of now, no related illnesses have been reported from this tea recall, but authorities continue to stay vigilant.

The recall has sparked significant dialogue online, with many consumers raising concerns regarding food labeling and allergen safety. On platforms like Reddit, users promptly identified almond as the undeclared allergen and highlighted the necessity of precise labeling for individuals with major allergies.
