Daniel Craig returned as the charming detective Benoit Blanc in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which opened the London Film Festival on Wednesday. The festival, now in its 69th edition, will run for 12 days, featuring red carpet events, screenings, and talks with film legends like Daniel Day-Lewis and Chloe Zhao.
Craig walked the red carpet with co-stars Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, and others to promote the latest installment in the popular Knives Out series. The new film is darker and more gothic than its predecessors, Knives Out (2019) and Glass Onion (2022).
“They’re all different from each other, which is what we set out to do,” Craig told reporters. “We wanted each one to feel unique, and I wouldn’t do it unless I had fun doing it.”

In this murder mystery, Josh Brolin plays Monsignor Wicks, a small-town priest whose death raises suspicion among his parishioners. The ensemble cast also includes Josh O’Connor, Jeremy Renner, Daryl McCormack, and Cailee Spaeny. Director and writer Rian Johnson revealed that discussions about the story began shortly after Glass Onion premiered at the London Film Festival.
“We wanted to make something a bit more grounded, still funny and entertaining, and a fun ride for the audience,” Johnson said.
The London Film Festival will showcase 247 films, with stars like George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Paul Mescal attending to promote their films Jay Kelly, After the Hunt, and Hamnet. Other highlights include Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Emma Stone’s Bugonia directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, and Anemone, marking Daniel Day-Lewis’ return from retirement for his son’s debut film.
Filmmakers including Lanthimos, Day-Lewis, and Zhao will participate in panel discussions, exploring their work and filmmaking process. This year, 42% of the selected films were directed by female or nonbinary filmmakers, reflecting the festival’s commitment to geographic and creative diversity.
Festival Director Kristy Matheson said, “We want the programme to represent the city and the world around us, offering a wide variety of perspectives and stories.”
The London Film Festival will continue until October 19, 2025, offering audiences a unique mix of films, celebrity appearances, and insightful discussions on cinema.
