Tragic Helicopter Incident in Dagestan Claims Lives of 5

Tragic Helicopter Incident in Dagestan Claims Lives of 5

Post by : Rameen Ariff

In a tragic turn of events, five individuals, including four high-ranking officials from a Russian military factory, lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Dagestan. This incident took place near the Caspian Sea on November 7, involving a Ka-226 helicopter that was transporting staff from the EU-sanctioned Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant.

Footage shared on social media depicted the helicopter making a landing attempt on a beach when it struck a rock with its tail, resulting in the rear rotor detaching. The helicopter quickly became unstable, with its tail dangling dangerously. Shortly afterward, it collided with an unoccupied private residence in Achi-Su, igniting a fire that ravaged the beachfront property. Emergency personnel were visible at the scene, battling the flames that leveled the structure.

The Kizlyar Plant confirmed that among the deceased were four of its employees, including Achalo Magomedov, the company's deputy general director of construction and transport support. A flight mechanic also perished in the incident, while two others suffered injuries.

Initial findings suggest that a "technical malfunction" was the cause of the crash, with no indications of sabotage or human error. Russia's federal aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, has labeled the event as a "disaster" and announced its involvement in the forthcoming investigation.

Previously sanctioned by the EU in 2024 for its role in producing military aircraft components for Russia, the Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant specializes in aircraft ground control systems and diagnostic tools, alongside on-board equipment. One of its notable products is the DZ-UM lock, a bomb rack for SU-25 fighter jets widely utilized in Russian operations in Ukraine.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities scrutinizing the technical failures responsible for the rotor's detachment, which led to this catastrophic event. This incident raises serious concerns about the safety protocols for helicopters and the operational dangers encountered by personnel in Russia's defense sector.
