TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee has become a notable victim of a significant cyber fraud case, underscoring the perilous nature of cybercrime that affects both citizens and public figures. A staggering Rs 57 lakh was drained from his inactive State Bank of India (SBI) account through unauthorized transactions.
Representing Serampore in West Bengal, Banerjee voiced his apprehensions, stating, “If someone of my status can be ensnared in bank fraud, what happens to ordinary citizens? Why isn't the Ministry of Finance taking steps to create a dedicated unit for combating cyber fraud?”
The account, which Banerjee had left untouched for several years, was established between 2001 and 2006 during his tenure as the MLA of Asansol South. Cybercriminals reportedly utilized forged PAN and Aadhaar cards, even editing in Banerjee’s image to perpetrate the fraud. Numerous transactions went undetected, leading to the unauthorized withdrawal of nearly Rs 57 lakh.
Upon noticing unusual activity, the bank promptly filed a complaint with the Kolkata Police cybercrime division. Banerjee confirmed that SBI has reimbursed the sum, attributing it to an internal error that allowed the unauthorized transactions.
Authorities are currently investigating the execution of this fraud and evaluating the bank's protocols to avert similar incidents in the future. This alarming case emphasizes the precariousness even prominent public figures face against cyber threats and highlights the critical need for improved security measures and heightened public awareness.
