In a thrilling display of skill, Stephen Curry scored an impressive 49 points, sinking crucial free throws at the end to secure a 109-108 victory for the Golden State Warriors against the San Antonio Spurs. This latest clash was part of the NBA Cup series, held in San Antonio, highlighting Curry’s exceptional leadership under pressure.
This win marked a clean sweep for the Warriors, who successfully claimed both games of their short series in San Antonio within just a few nights. With this victory, Golden State has improved their record to three wins in their last four outings, while also achieving a 1-1 standing in West Group C of the NBA’s in-season tournament, an identical record held by the Spurs.
The Spurs appeared to be in control early in the fourth quarter, establishing a 10-point cushion that put the Warriors on edge. However, Golden State maintained their composure, with key contributions from Curry, Gary Payton II, and Brandin Podziemski, eventually wresting a 101-100 lead within the final three and a half minutes.
Momentarily igniting the Spurs' hopes, Victor Wembanyama executed a difficult tip-in that briefly lifted San Antonio to a 108-105 advantage with just over a minute remaining. The atmosphere electrified the crowd as expectations soared, but the Warriors kept fighting back.
Jimmy Butler III responded with a basket that narrowed the gap, but the Spurs' attempts to extend their lead faltered when Wembanyama executed a crucial block and De'Aaron Fox squandered a scoring opportunity. With only 6.4 seconds on the clock, Curry was fouled driving toward the basket, leading to a pivotal moment. He coolly converted both free throws, giving the Warriors a slender 109-108 lead.
After a timeout, Fox attempted the decisive shot for the Spurs, but his contested jumper went awry as the buzzer sounded, allowing the Warriors to clinch the win by a solitary point in a nail-biting finish that captivated fans.
While Curry took center stage, he was ably supported by Butler III, who netted 21 points, along with Will Richard and Brandin Podziemski contributing 10 points each. Their impressive shooting ensured Golden State remained competitive right up until Curry sealed the deal.
For the Spurs, Wembanyama had an excellent night, ending with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Fox also showcased his skills with a commendable 24 points and 10 assists. Additional contributions came from Julian Champagnie with 14 points, while Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Ultimately, even this talented effort couldn’t hinder Curry’s late game heroics.
The game’s initial phases showed fierce competition, with the Spurs leading slightly 20-18 after the first quarter. The Warriors showcased their long-range shooting prowess, establishing a brief lead at 40-33 before the Spurs answered with a strong 10-4 run, and at halftime, Golden State led narrowly by 47-45.
Throughout the third quarter, both teams displayed relentless determination. Curry’s impressive bank shot while being fouled energized the Warriors, spearheading a 14-6 surge to give them a slightly enhanced 68-66 advantage as the quarter wound down. The match remained evenly contested, with neither side able to create a significant distance.
Ultimately, it was Curry’s spectacular performance, infused with confidence and experience, that distinguished the outcome. His 49 points and pivotal free throws underscored the Warriors' capabilities in a tightly contested NBA Cup battle, leaving San Antonio with renewed hope and the firm belief that they remain contenders this season.
