Dhaka, Bangladesh: A significant ruling was issued on Monday by a Dhaka court, sentencing Sheikh Rehana, sister of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to seven years of imprisonment for corruption associated with the acquisition of valuable land plots in the capital. Her daughter, Tulip Siddiq, a British parliamentarian, was handed down a two-year prison sentence in the same case, confirmed prosecutors.
Furthermore, former premier Hasina, along with 14 other officials, was sentenced to five years in prison due to their involvement. As things stand, the 78-year-old Hasina has been residing in India since her removal last year, amid a revolt led by students, while Rehana's whereabouts remain unclear.
Case Overview
The Anti-Corruption Commission accused Siddiq of actively lobbying for land allocations, exerting pressure on her aunt, Hasina, to secure plots for her family. Investigators discovered that Siddiq communicated via encrypted messages and met personally with Salahuddin Ahmed, the former principal secretary, to facilitate the process.
Prosecutor Khan Mainul Hasan stated, “Tulip urged her aunt, Sheikh Hasina, to allocate land for her family, while she herself secured three plots—one for herself and two for her children.”
Judicial Proceedings
Judge Rabiul Alam, referencing the Holy Quran, affirmed the court's jurisdiction to prosecute any Bangladeshi citizen regardless of their residency abroad. The interim government plans to formally inform British authorities regarding Siddiq’s conviction.
Tulip Siddiq, who resigned from her position as the UK's anti-corruption minister earlier this year amid related inquiries, called the trial a “trial of persecution and absurdity.” There has yet to be a response from Rehana or the family at large.
Aftermath
This ruling escalates the political turbulence in Bangladesh, shedding light on the scrutiny of previous leaders and their kin. Analysts predict that the verdict could influence Bangladesh’s diplomatic ties, especially considering Siddiq’s political stature in the UK and Hasina’s lingering presence in India.
