In a significant move for their pitching lineup, the Toronto Blue Jays have completed a three-year, $30 million contract with right-handed pitcher Cody Ponce, as reported by various sources.
Ponce, now 31, just wrapped up an impressive stint in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) with the Hanwha Eagles, boasting an outstanding record of 17-1, a 1.89 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and an incredible 252 strikeouts in 180.2 innings. His exceptional performance earned him the KBO’s Most Valuable Player title.
The last time Ponce took the mound in Major League Baseball was in 2021 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he made 15 appearances and finished with a 7.04 ERA over 38.1 innings. Although he faced challenges in the MLB, his impressive development overseas gives the Blue Jays hope he can replicate that success back in the majors.
Drafted in the second round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, Ponce carries a career MLB record showing a 5.86 ERA with 48 strikeouts across 55.1 innings. With this latest contract, Toronto is placing its trust in Ponce’s recent accolades to enhance their pitching strength in the coming seasons.
