China has officially welcomed its third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, in a significant advance in its naval modernization efforts. This new addition not only bolsters China’s sea power but also cements its position as the country with the second-largest fleet of aircraft carriers globally, just behind the United States.
The commissioning event, attended by President Xi Jinping this week, emphasizes China's aspirations to be a leading maritime power in the Asia-Pacific. Named after a coastal province in southeastern China, the Fujian exemplifies state-of-the-art naval engineering coupled with progressive military technology.
Distinguishing itself from its predecessors, Liaoning and Shandong, the Fujian is the first carrier in China to incorporate an electromagnetic catapult launch system. This upgrade facilitates the launch of heavier, fully-loaded aircraft, thereby enhancing the carrier's operational range and strike potential. It also allows the use of advanced aircraft, including the KJ-600 early-warning plane and the stealth J-35 fighter.
The Fujian stands out as China’s first aircraft carrier designed from the ground up, unlike the Liaoning, a repurposed Soviet vessel, and the Shandong, which follows the Liaoning’s design. With three carriers now in its fleet, China exceeds nations like India, the UK, and Italy, all operating two carriers each.
From a technological perspective, the Fujian is the second aircraft carrier globally to feature an electromagnetic catapult system—previously installed only on the USS Gerald R. Ford of the U.S. Navy. This innovative launch method replaces older steam-powered systems, leading to smoother aircraft launches while alleviating mechanical stress on both the carrier and its planes.
Despite a full-load displacement exceeding 80,000 tons, the Fujian is somewhat smaller than the U.S. Navy's Nimitz and Ford-class carriers, which can reach up to 100,000 tons. It is estimated to carry between 40 to 60 aircraft, while American counterparts typically accommodate 60 to 70.
A significant limitation is that China's carriers use conventional power sources, which cap their operational range at around 8,000–10,000 nautical miles, contrasting with the virtually limitless range of nuclear-powered U.S. carriers.
Experts suggest that China is on a path to develop nuclear-powered carriers as part of its next naval evolution. Military analysts assert that the capabilities and design of the Fujian constitute a pivotal development in this direction, enabling China to enhance its influence in the Pacific and crucial areas like the South China Sea, East China Sea, and Taiwan Strait.
Equipped with three electromagnetic catapults, two aircraft elevators, and a modern flight deck, the Fujian is among the most advanced ships in the Chinese fleet. Although it has slightly fewer launch systems than the USS Ford, it reflects China's advancing proficiency in naval warfare technology.
As China furthers its naval expansions, the Fujian's commissioning signals its ambitions on the seas. This new carrier not only upgrades China’s defensive capabilities but also expands its strategic reach well beyond local waters, thereby affecting the global naval power dynamic.
