China on Thursday strongly criticized the United States after Washington announced criminal murder charges against former Cuban President Raul Castro. Beijing accused the US of using its judicial system as a political tool to pressure Cuba and interfere in the affairs of another sovereign nation.
Speaking during a regular press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China firmly opposes what it described as the abuse of judicial methods and sanctions against Cuba. He urged the United States to stop using legal measures and economic pressure as instruments of oppression.
The comments came shortly after the US Department of Justice announced criminal charges against Raul Castro in Miami. The case quickly triggered international political reactions, especially among countries that maintain close diplomatic ties with Cuba and oppose American sanctions policies toward the island nation.
China emphasized that Cuba’s sovereignty and independence should be respected and warned against any threats or pressure directed at Havana. Beijing also called on Washington to avoid actions that could further increase tensions between the two countries.
Outside the Versailles Cafe in Miami, Cuban communities gathered following the announcement of the charges. Images from the scene showed protesters and supporters reacting strongly to the latest legal action involving the former Cuban leader. The development has once again highlighted the long-standing political divide surrounding US-Cuba relations.
China and Cuba have maintained strong diplomatic and economic ties for decades, with Beijing often supporting Havana against international sanctions and restrictions. Chinese officials have repeatedly criticized unilateral sanctions and foreign political pressure imposed by major powers.
The latest dispute adds another layer to already strained geopolitical tensions involving the United States, China, and several Latin American allies. Political analysts believe the case could trigger wider diplomatic debate regarding the use of legal systems in international political conflicts.
Washington has not yet responded directly to China’s remarks, but the issue is expected to remain a major topic in global diplomatic discussions in the coming days as reactions continue emerging from different governments around the world.
