China Orders High-Rise Safety Checks After Deadly Hong Kong Fire

China Orders High-Rise Safety Checks After Deadly Hong Kong Fire

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Beijing: China has launched a nationwide campaign to tackle fire hazards in high-rise buildings, following a devastating blaze in Hong Kong that claimed at least 128 lives. The tragic incident, one of the deadliest fires the city has witnessed in decades, has raised serious concerns about safety standards in some of the region’s most crowded residential towers.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, China’s State Council Work Safety Committee has issued a directive ordering an immediate inspection and correction drive across the country. The campaign focuses on identifying major fire risks and strengthening safety measures in high-rise buildings, which are common in many Chinese cities due to rapid urban development.

Authorities will carry out thorough checks on the use of flammable or highly combustible construction materials inside and around tall buildings. The notice also highlights the need to inspect traditional building supplies such as bamboo scaffolding and non-flame-retardant safety nets, which are still widely used at many construction sites.

CCTV reported that local governments have been instructed to prioritise safety and ensure stricter monitoring. “All regions must enhance their sense of responsibility, balance development with safety, and treat the investigation and removal of fire risks in high-rise buildings as a vital task,” the statement said.

Officials have also been asked to increase supervision, step up enforcement, and ensure that safety improvements deliver visible and lasting results. The move reflects China’s growing efforts to prevent large-scale accidents and protect residents living in densely populated urban areas.
