Post by : Rameen Ariff

Chen Ning Yang, one of the world’s most renowned physicists and a Nobel Prize winner, passed away at the age of 103 in Beijing on October 18, Xinhua reported. Chen Ning Yang, also known as Yang Zhenning, left behind a profound scientific legacy, having reshaped modern physics with his groundbreaking work. Throughout his life, Chen Ning Yang remained a symbol of dedication to science, inspiring generations of physicists in China and around the world. His death marks the end of an era in physics, as Chen Ning Yang was not only a Nobel laureate but also a pioneer in bridging Chinese and international scientific communities.

Born in Hefei, Anhui province, in 1922, Chen Ning Yang achieved global recognition when he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Tsung-Dao Lee in 1957. Chen Ning Yang’s research, particularly in the field of particle physics, earned him international acclaim and established him as one of the foremost minds of the 20th century. In addition to his Nobel Prize, Chen Ning Yang was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and served as a professor at Tsinghua University, where he dedicated the later years of his life to teaching and mentoring young scientists. Chen Ning Yang’s career was a testament to his unwavering commitment to the advancement of science.

Chen Ning Yang pursued his doctorate at the University of Chicago in the 1940s, where he honed the skills that would later earn him global recognition. Chen Ning Yang became the first Chinese scientist to return to China in the 1970s after diplomatic relations between the United States and China began to improve. His return marked a historic moment in scientific collaboration, as Chen Ning Yang played a vital role in strengthening China’s research in physics. Throughout his career, Chen Ning Yang remained committed to fostering international scientific dialogue, making him a key figure in both Chinese and global science.

Since 1999, Chen Ning Yang taught at Tsinghua University, continuing his lifelong mission of education and mentorship. He had spent eight years of his childhood at Tsinghua, where his father served as a professor, making his return a full-circle moment. Tsinghua University paid tribute to Chen Ning Yang by greying out the colors on its website, a solemn remembrance of his extraordinary contributions. Chen Ning Yang’s work and presence at Tsinghua inspired countless students, and his teachings continue to influence scientific thought and research in China.

Chen Ning Yang often reflected on his remarkable life, saying, “My life has been a circle, where I started out from a point, travelled a long way, and finally returned to where I came from.” These words capture the spirit of Chen Ning Yang’s journey: from a student in Anhui to a global scientific pioneer, and finally back to the institution that shaped his early years. Chen Ning Yang’s life was a testament to intellectual curiosity, dedication, and the enduring impact one individual can have on the world of science. His death at 103 marks the loss of a visionary physicist whose work will continue to inspire generations.
