In a significant move to bolster national security, the Government of Canada has announced a $1.4 billion investment aimed at ramping up domestic ammunition production. This initiative, revealed on April 8, 2026, by Joël Lightbound in Repentigny, strives to minimize dependency on international suppliers.
The funding falls under the Canadian Defence Industry Resilience (CDIR) Program, which seeks to reinforce Canada’s defence industry by enhancing local manufacturing capabilities and ensuring a robust supply chain. The program emphasizes the importance of cultivating critical materials essential for national defense within the nation's borders.
A major portion of the funding will be allocated to General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems based in Quebec. Multiple agreements will enable the company to modernize and construct facilities dedicated to ammunition production, including a new nitrocellulose production site and advanced assembly lines for artillery charges and high-explosive projectiles crucial for contemporary defense strategies.
This investment marks a vital step in restoring Canada's domestic nitrocellulose production capabilities, a fundamental element in ammunition manufacturing. By re-establishing this essential production, the government aims to fortify supply chain resilience and guarantee a steady flow of critical materials, especially during heightened demands.
Moreover, support is extending to IMT Precision in Ingersoll, where a new facility for producing metal shells for advanced artillery projectiles will be established, thereby broadening Canada’s production capabilities.
Officials anticipate that these projects will generate over 350 jobs, through both direct and indirect employment opportunities. The initiatives also promise to foster innovation, build connections with educational institutions, and attract further investments within the defense sector.
Aligned with Canada’s overarching Defence Industrial Strategy, this initiative emphasizes security, sovereignty, and economic enhancement. By intensifying local production, the government seeks to ensure the Canadian Armed Forces have consistent access to essential equipment while promoting long-term economic sustainability.
In summary, this substantial investment signifies Canada’s dedication to strengthening its defense industry, enhancing national security, and fostering quality job creation, while underscoring the critical need for developing local capacities to address future defense challenges in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
