The Canadian government has unveiled a fresh funding initiative designed to bolster school food programs nationwide, emphasizing enhancement in children's health, learning, and overall wellness. This announcement was made on April 8, 2026, by Anna Gainey and Marjorie Michel in Ottawa, as part of the ongoing National School Food Program.
Named the Funding Research for Evidence in School Food and Health (FRESH) Team Grant, the initiative will allocate $12.6 million over the next three years. The primary goal of the funding is to facilitate research aimed at optimizing the planning, delivery, and evaluation of school food programs throughout Canada, ensuring they are effective, inclusive, and driven by genuine community needs.
The funding will support up to 14 research projects across three critical themes. These themes encompass assessing the health, well-being, and social effects of school food programs; refining policies and program delivery for equitable access; and addressing the specific needs of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students and communities. This initiative strongly underscores a commitment to enhancing accessibility and advantages of school food programs for all children.
The financial backing comes from several government agencies, including Employment and Social Development Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada, along with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The collective aim of these organizations is to establish a robust research foundation to guide future policymaking and optimize outcomes for children and families.
Officials noted the crucial significance of access to nutritious food in a child's learning and developmental journey. The research facilitated by this program is expected to aid policymakers in identifying effective solutions, thus ensuring school food programs are fair, efficient, and sustainable in the long run. Additionally, it aims to alleviate the financial burdens on families by enhancing access to healthy meals in educational settings.
Applications for this funding are currently open, with a registration deadline of June 25, 2026, and a final submission deadline of October 7, 2026. Researchers and organizations interested in applying are invited to consult the guidelines and present proposals that tackle critical challenges within school food systems.
This new funding initiative signifies Canada’s broader dedication to uplifting children and youth via improved nutrition, better educational results, and inclusive community programs. By integrating academic research with practical applications, the government intends to enact meaningful enhancements in school food frameworks across the nation.
