In a significant move to boost national security, the Canadian Government has unveiled a $1.4 billion investment directed towards enhancing local ammunition manufacturing capabilities. This announcement, made by Joël Lightbound in Repentigny, underscores Canada's commitment to reduce dependence on foreign supply.
The funding will flow through the Canadian Defence Industry Resilience Program (CDIR), aimed at constructing a robust and self-sufficient defence industry. It plans to assist companies in expanding their production capabilities, reinforcing supply chains, and cultivating essential defence-related expertise within the country.
A considerable share of this funding will go to General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems for various initiatives in Quebec. Projects include a new nitrocellulose production facility in Valleyfield and facilities designed for the assembly and packaging of artillery charges and high-explosive projectiles at locations in Valleyfield and Le Gardeur. Such enhancements are expected to reinstate vital manufacturing capabilities crucial for ammunition production.
Furthermore, financial backing will also be extended to IMT Precision in Ingersoll for the establishment of a facility producing metal shells suited for contemporary artillery systems, thereby further solidifying Canada’s self-sufficiency in defence needs.
Officials emphasize that this investment will not only enhance Canada’s military readiness but will also yield economic rewards. The projects are anticipated to generate hundreds of jobs throughout their construction and operation phases while also benefiting local enterprises and stimulating additional investments within the defence sector. By promoting local production, Canada aims to guarantee a consistent and dependable supply of crucial materials for its Armed Forces.
This initiative is a vital part of Canada’s overarching defence industrial strategy, which seeks to bolster supply chain resilience and respond adeptly to emerging global security challenges. By fortifying its domestic capabilities, Canada aspires to maintain greater dominion over essential defence assets and foster long-term national security.
