A serious collision in Calgary on Monday morning left two individuals hospitalized, including one in critical condition, as winter weather led to perilous driving conditions. This incident has escalated concerns regarding road safety as icy surfaces affect travel through the city.
The crash occurred around 6:40 a.m. on Crowchild Trail N.W. near University Drive when a vehicle fell nearly 25 feet from an overpass onto the roadway below, landing in an overturned position. Authorities reported that the car collided with another vehicle before breaching a traffic barrier and dropping onto the northbound lanes.
Police identified that a white Toyota Corolla, driven by a male in his 30s, struck the rear of a Toyota Yaris operated by a female in her 40s. A female passenger within the Corolla suffered critical injuries, and the driver was also significantly hurt. Fortunately, the Yaris driver was unharmed. Although authorities found no signs of intoxication, they are scrutinizing whether speed combined with the poor conditions might have contributed to the accident.
Officials described the roads as exceedingly treacherous at the time of the incident. An officer present at the scene noted that the surface was icy, leading to very unsafe driving conditions. Weather warnings from Environment Canada indicated that freezing drizzle and fog can form thin ice layers, which can be hard for drivers to detect.
This crash was part of a series of road incidents that day. Police noted multiple other collisions happened around the city that morning, including one involving six vehicles, where two were school buses, resulting in three children being hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials have reminded drivers to exercise caution even as spring approaches. A spokesperson from the City of Calgary pointed out that winter conditions can still emerge in April, particularly due to freezing drizzle that can quickly make roads and sidewalks slippery.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the crash while urging motorists to slow down, keep safe distances, and adapt their driving behavior to the existing weather circumstances.
