On Monday, Manchester United surged into the Premier League top six with an impressive 4-1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers, driven by a stellar performance from Bruno Fernandes. The midfielder showcased his prowess by scoring two goals and providing an assist, reaffirming his critical role for the Red Devils.
Fernandes opened the scoring in the first half, but Wolves’ Jean-Ricner Bellegarde equalized just before halftime. After some initial back and forth, Wolves’ Bryan Mbeumo briefly leveled the score in the second half, but United swiftly regained authority. Mason Mount's sharp finish in the 62nd minute put United ahead, and Fernandes capped off the day with a penalty in the 82nd minute.
This defeat marked Wolves' eighth loss in a row, leaving them stranded at the bottom of the table with only two points—eight points adrift from Burnley above them. In contrast, United improved to 25 points, equal to Chelsea in fifth place.
Wolves' manager Rob Edwards expressed frustration over his team's errors: “We fought back but conceded goals that were hard to overcome. We're paying the price for our mistakes and need to improve; it won't come quickly.”
United took advantage of Wolves' blunders. A misplaced ball from Andre set up Fernandes for his opening goal, which Sam Johnstone could only deflect into the net. Wolves responded with Bellegarde's volley, their first league goal since October 26, but the resurgence from United in the second half was unyielding.
Wolves took a momentary lead through Mbeumo's sleek counterattack, but Mount and Fernandes quickly rallied to flip the match in United’s favor. Mount’s composed strike came from a deft chip by Fernandes, with the latter’s penalty sealing a full circle performance from United.
Mount reflected on the encounter, stating, “We had numerous chances in the first half but were careless. The gaffer gave us a necessary push at halftime, and we came out with resolve. We need to keep our killer instinct and convert chances. These three points are crucial, but we can't let up.”
The win underscores United’s attacking capabilities while highlighting Wolves’ ongoing difficulties as the battle intensifies at the foot of the Premier League.
