The 74th iteration of Miss Universe 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand, has turned into a whirlwind of controversies, marking one of the most tumultuous seasons in the pageant's history. Initially celebrated for beauty, culture, and empowerment, the event quickly spiraled into a series of resignations, scandals, and public backlash. Recently, Brigitta Schaback, Estonia's representative, announced her resignation from the title of Miss Universe Estonia on November 23.
Schaback's exit followed a wave of online dissatisfaction regarding the crowning of Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, as Miss Universe 2025. Amidst this uproar, Schaback took to Instagram to communicate her desire to dissociate from the title and its management.
In her message, she detailed significant disagreements with Estonia's national director, Natalie Korneitsik. Schaback stressed that her values and work ethic clashed fundamentally with those in charge, indicating that staying in her role would force her to compromise on principles she cherishes. While reaffirming her dedication to women’s empowerment and equality, she announced her intent to continue her advocacy on her own terms, stating, “I am stepping down from the title of Miss Universe Estonia. My values and work ethics don't align with those of the national director, Natalie Korneitsik. My commitment is to women’s empowerment and equality, and I will continue this work independently without any further association with Miss Universe Estonia.”
Her departure adds yet another twist to an already turbulent pageant season. Before the finale, Miss Mexico Fátima Bosch was subjected to harsh criticism from Thailand’s director, Nawat Itsaragrisl, inciting several contestants to exit in solidarity. This incident sparked widespread outrage and forced Nawat to publicly apologize.
The wave of controversy continued post-crowning, with many alleging that Bosch's final answer fell short compared to other finalists. Viewers expressed that deserving contestants were passed over. Notably, former Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova took to Instagram to voice her dissatisfaction, suggesting that the first runner-up deserved the title, criticizing the lack of transparency in judging.
Additionally, another judge, Omar Harfouch, resigned just days prior to the event, claiming a “secret committee” had predetermined the top 30 finalists, with results known well before the contestants took the stage. Although Miss Universe President Raul Rocha denied these allegations, stating Harfouch was removed from the judging panel.
Amid resignations, claims of rigging, and growing skepticism surrounding the selection process, the 74th Miss Universe edition has indeed become one of the most controversial and discussed events in recent memory. Instead of celebrating global talent, the controversies have consistently overshadowed the pageant's allure.
