On Saturday, Brazil experienced a dramatic development as federal police arrested former President Jair Bolsonaro in Brasília just as he was about to begin a 27-year prison term linked to a failed coup attempt.
The preemptive arrest was ordered by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, following allegations that Bolsonaro had interfered with an ankle monitor required by the court. The Justice highlighted concerns that Bolsonaro might flee to a nearby embassy amid possible protests by his supporters.
At 70 years old, Bolsonaro was taken from his residence in the exclusive Jardim Botânico neighborhood to the headquarters of federal police early Saturday morning. The Justice insisted the arrest procedure should maintain the former president's dignity, avoiding handcuffs and media frenzy.
This arrest followed a video shared by Bolsonaro’s son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, urging supporters to challenge judicial decisions. Justice de Moraes condemned the video as a direct attempt to instigate public unrest and threaten democratic processes.
Bolsonaro's supporters responded fiercely, decrying the arrest as politically motivated. Former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro stated on social media that they “will not abandon our nation,” while party leaders pledged to support him. Detractors questioned the need for the arrest, arguing the ankle monitor was functioning correctly and criticizing its timing.
As a divisive figure in Brazilian politics, Bolsonaro was found guilty alongside several associates for orchestrating an armed group that aimed to topple the government after his defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the 2022 elections. The prosecution indicated that the scheme included plans to assassinate Lula and instigate an insurrection in early 2023.
Although he cannot run for office until 2030, Bolsonaro remains a significant influencer among Brazil's far-right electorate. His connections to international figures like former U.S. President Donald Trump have led to global scrutiny of his case.
