In a thrilling encounter on Monday night, the Columbus Blue Jackets triumphed over the Montreal Canadiens with a 4-3 shootout win. The match was packed with intensity from the outset, showcasing both teams’ efforts and skillful plays. Columbus quickly took the lead and defended it for most of the game, but the Canadiens fought back, ultimately sending the game into overtime and a shootout. Kirill Marchenko's decisive goal in the shootout secured the victory for the Blue Jackets, marking their fifth consecutive game with points.
The scoring began just under seven minutes into the first period when Zach Werenski skillfully maneuvered near the point and delivered a precise wrist shot that went past the goaltender. Columbus maintained a strong offensive presence throughout the first period, signaling their desire to command the game. Montreal showcased its offensive capabilities but struggled to get past goalie Jet Greaves, who made several crucial saves.
The second period saw Montreal level the score early on with a clever play ending in a goal by Oliver Kapanen at 4:47. However, Columbus swiftly responded, with Adam Fantilli netting his fourth goal in five games merely five minutes later to regain the lead. Dmitri Voronkov extended it to 3-1 with a power-play tip at 13:32, giving the Blue Jackets a comfortable cushion heading into the last period.
The Canadiens came out firing in the third period, with Joel Anderson reducing the deficit to 3-2 in the 8:28 mark. With just over a minute to play in regulation, Lane Hutson found the back of the net, tying the game and forcing it into overtime. Montreal dominated overtime, outshooting Columbus 6-0 and applying pressure. Nevertheless, Greaves stood tall, particularly with a critical save against Ivan Demidov in the dying seconds of overtime.
With the score still tied after extra time, the match transitioned into a shootout, where Kirill Marchenko emerged as the hero by scoring the final goal, sealing the 4-3 victory. Marchenko's performance also included two assists, extending his point streak to 12 games, just a point shy of the franchise record. Zach Werenski and Dmitri Voronkov each provided essential contributions with a goal and an assist, and Adam Fantilli added another crucial goal for the team.
Greaves recorded 29 saves out of 32 shots, enhancing his record to 6-4-2 this season. His timely goaltending was pivotal in maintaining Columbus’ lead as well as during the overtime and shootout phases. On the other side, the Canadiens’ Jakub Dobes managed to stop 20 of 23 shots, though his team struggled to hold momentum late. With contributions from Hutson, Anderson, and Kapanen, Columbus' balanced attack complemented their solid defense, earning them a crucial road victory.
