A significant fire erupted at Brahmaputra Apartments in Delhi on Saturday afternoon, causing panic among residents as thick smoke billowed from the multi-storey complex located on BD Marg. Housing several Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, the building quickly became the focal point of a major emergency response, with multiple fire engines dispatched to address the blaze. This incident has raised urgent questions about fire safety measures in government-provided residences situated just steps from the Parliament.
Initial reports indicate that the fire ignited on one of the upper floors. Residents spotted flames and smoke emanating from the windows, spurring immediate evacuation actions. As the situation unfolded, panic ensued, with officials working diligently to ensure the safety of MPs and their families residing within the building. The Delhi Fire Service rapidly mobilized its resources, deploying several fire tenders to manage the incident. However, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale voiced concerns on the social media platform X (previously Twitter), highlighting apparent delays in the arrival of fire crews. He stated, "HUGE FIRE at Brahmaputra Apartments at BD Marg in Delhi. All residents are Rajya Sabha MPs. The building is 200 meters from Parliament. NO FIRE BRIGADE SINCE 30 mins. The fire is still burning and rising." His remarks have evoked significant public backlash and triggered a political debate over the perceived lack of emergency preparedness.
Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020, the Brahmaputra Apartments is among several high-rise complexes designed to accommodate Members of Parliament. Located less than 200 meters from the heart of governance in the capital, it is viewed as a highly secure residential zone. Yet, the fire incident has spotlighted potential weaknesses in safety protocols and the effectiveness of emergency response campaigns in such sensitive areas.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with residents fleeing the building and security personnel aiding elderly MPs and their families. While the Delhi Fire Department has yet to provide an exact tally of those evacuated, early reports indicate no significant injuries. Nonetheless, extensive property damage was reported, leaving many shaken and fearful.
Fire officials pointed out that the blaze might have been intensified by the building's dense structure, along with a high concentration of electrical systems. Additionally, they noted that the narrow access routes to the complex hindered rapid fire service response. These insights have sparked grave concerns regarding whether government housing in Delhi is adequately equipped to tackle emergencies of this nature.
Political figures across party lines have voiced their concerns, calling for immediate actions to ensure responsibility and law enforcement. This fire incident at Brahmaputra Apartments is being viewed not just as an unfortunate event but as a wake-up call for systemic reforms in fire safety regulations and emergency preparedness, especially in VIP zones. As the flames were finally doused, questions persist—how could an inferno at an MPs’ residence so close to the Parliament take so long to control?
As the Delhi Fire Service continues to oversee the area for any possible reignition, experts highlight the critical need for regular safety examinations in residential buildings, particularly those housing public officials. The fire at Brahmaputra Apartments stands as a severe reminder that even the most secure structures can face catastrophic events without rigorous adherence to safety standards.
As investigations progress, residents of Delhi—and indeed citizens nationwide—await clear revelations. This incident has not only rattled the capital but has reignited vital dialogues about fire safety, accountability, and emergency response within India’s key administrative sectors.
