Saudi Arabia's ecological variety is opening up golden avenues for photographers keen on documenting avian migration and the habitats of indigenous species.
Nader Al-Shammari, an experienced photographer, has recounted his bird photography journey that started in 2011. Primarily focusing on the Al-Jouf Region's birds, he has also ventured into the Aseer Region and beyond.
Al-Shammari disclosed that he has cataloged over 230 bird species in Al-Jouf, which is impressive considering Saudi Arabia recorded a total of 507 species.
He pointed out that the unique environmental features of Al-Jouf make it a crucial site for migratory birds, combining landscapes of mountains, deserts, inland waters, and farmland. Its inviting climate also draws birds during migratory periods.
Numerous migratory species frequently visit Al-Jouf, staying for extended periods. Through his lens, Al-Shammari has documented these transient species alongside local inhabitants.
Recent monitoring initiatives in Al-Jouf have also identified several notable and rare species, such as the wood pigeon and the greater hoopoe lark, underscoring the area's ecological significance.
Al-Jouf is increasingly recognized as a premier spot for birdwatching and wildlife photography in Saudi Arabia's diverse landscape.
