The Baylor Bears registered their second consecutive win of the season with a 78-69 triumph over the Washington Huskies on Sunday evening in Waco, Texas. This victory pushed Baylor’s record to 2-0, while Washington fell to 2-1. The game featured a cohesive performance from Baylor, demonstrating balanced scoring and robust defense.
Sophomore Cameron Carr led the charge for Baylor, scoring 16 points, while freshman Tounde Yessoufou added 13. Together, they played pivotal roles in maintaining the Bears’ offensive tempo, crucial in staving off any Washington attempts to close the gap.
Baylor showcased its strength in depth, as six out of eight players scored in double figures. Dan Skillings Jr., Caden Powell, and Issac Williams each chipped in with 12 points, with Michael Rataj contributing 11. Additionally, Powell dominated the boards, retrieving a team-high 10 rebounds.
Washington initially took control, surging to an 11-4 lead following a putback jumper by Franck Kepnang at 15:46 in the first half. The Huskies appeared poised to extend their lead with crisp ball movement and an effective press on Baylor. However, the Bears quickly regained their footing and answered with a decisive scoring spurt.
After trailing early on, Baylor rallied with a 16-6 run, culminating in a jumper from Dan Skillings Jr., allowing them to take a 20-17 lead within the first ten minutes. As Baylor's defensive efforts intensified, they maintained their lead and headed into halftime with a slight edge of 38-32.
In the first half, both teams were closely matched, making 14 of 32 attempts for a shooting percentage of 43.8%. Baylor managed to find a slight advantage through three successful 3-pointers and by making 7 out of 11 free throws, compared to Washington’s 4-for-6. Carr topped the first-half scoring with 13 points, while Rataj added nine for Baylor, and Peterson completed the half for Washington with six points.
Soaring into the second half, Baylor quickly extended their lead, as consecutive 3-pointers by Yessoufou and Skillings pushed the margin to double digits. Meanwhile, Washington struggled to find their rhythm beyond the arc, missing the first 13 attempts before Wesley Yates III finally landed one to narrow the margin to 57-53 with 9:48 left on the clock.
Washington showed their mettle in the final moments, going on a 6-0 run led by a 3-pointer from Quimari Peterson, closing the gap to 73-68 with just over two minutes to go. However, Baylor composed themselves, securing critical free throws from Skillings and Yessoufou that reestablished a seven-point lead, assisting them in effectively managing the closing phases of the game.
Although Washington faced defeat, several players excelled. Zoom Diallo led the Huskies with 15 points before fouling out in the closing minute, while Peterson contributed 11 points, Mandaquit added 10, and Hannes Steinbach achieved a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Their efforts kept the game competitive, yet couldn't match Baylor’s depth and scoring balance.
The game exemplified Baylor's depth and team cohesion, with six players hitting double digits. Their disciplined defense and superior rebounding were vital in limiting Washington’s open looks.
Baylor's powerful showing against Washington solidifies their status as an early-season contender to watch. They will strive to preserve their unbeaten streak as they look ahead to upcoming contests, while Washington will seek to regroup and enhance their outside shooting efficacy following a challenging night.
