Dhaka, Bangladesh — The government of Bangladesh has extended the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr holidays for government employees and officials to a seven-day break by declaring an additional public holiday on Wednesday, March 18. This decision was taken at a cabinet meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat on March 5, presided over by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Under the revised schedule, the holiday period will now span from Tuesday, March 17 to Monday, March 23. The holiday on March 17 was already in place on the occasion of Shab-e-Qadr, while March 18 has been newly declared a public holiday by executive order. Combined with the previously scheduled Eid break, the total covers seven consecutive days.
According to the Ministry of Public Administration, the original five-day holiday was set from March 19 to March 23, with March 21 marked as Eid-ul-Fitr day. March 19 and March 20 were to be observed as pre-Eid holidays, while March 22 and March 23 were designated as post-Eid holidays under executive orders.
Officials have indicated that the extension aims to ease travel pressures and provide uninterrupted time off for people journeying to their hometowns for Eid, which is expected to fall on March 20 or March 21, depending on the sighting of the moon.
State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj confirmed the decision to the media after the cabinet meeting, noting that the extra holiday will help ensure smoother travel and celebration arrangements across the country.
With the announcement of this extended holiday period, government offices will reopen on March 24, resuming official work after the week-long Eid break.
