In an impactful diplomatic action, the interim government of Bangladesh has officially requested India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently residing in New Delhi after being sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal. Hasina, aged 78, fled Bangladesh in August 2024, following the student-led “July Uprising” that resulted in her removal from power.
This extradition plea represents the third formal request from Dhaka, following earlier communications dispatched in December 2024 and in the aftermath of the tribunal’s verdict. Alongside Hasina, Bangladesh also seeks the return of former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, also sentenced to death in the same case and believed to be hiding in India. Former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who served as a witness for the state, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment.
The foreign ministry of Bangladesh highlighted that the extradition treaty binding the two countries obligates India to return those convicted. Officials have referred to any potential refusal by India as a “serious act of unfriendly behavior,” compromising the quest for justice within Bangladesh.
The political landscape in Bangladesh remains volatile following Hasina's ousting. Reports from the UN indicate that the brutal crackdown during July-August 2024 led to around 1,400 fatalities, which substantiated the tribunal’s charges. In the wake of the protests, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has taken charge of the interim government, working toward stability.
Despite existing tensions, recent diplomatic talks suggest a tentative willingness for engagement. Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman has met with Indian counterparts in New Delhi, and proposals have been made for India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval to visit Dhaka. Observers note that how this situation unfolds will challenge not only the bilateral relationship but also India’s stance on extraditing prominent political figures.
As developments occur, attention is focused on New Delhi’s reaction to Dhaka’s renewed plea, which could significantly impact regional diplomacy and Bangladesh's delicate political climate.
