In January, Australia and Indonesia are set to finalize a historic defence agreement that will significantly elevate their enduring security collaboration. This announcement coincides with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s inaugural state visit to Australia, as both leaders herald the treaty as a pivotal moment for their bilateral ties.
Greenlighted by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and President Prabowo, the treaty promises regular high-level discussions on security issues. It lays out a framework for cooperative defence initiatives and a protocol for responding collectively or independently to emerging security threats.
Albanese remarked, “This treaty symbolizes our nations' mutual understanding that peace and stability are best secured through unity,” indicating that this pact marks a new chapter in Australia-Indonesia relations. In his remarks, Prabowo stated, “A good neighbor supports one another in challenging times,” underscoring the cultural and strategic significance of their partnership.
The agreement builds upon prior commitments, such as the 2006 Lombok Treaty and the 2024 Defence Cooperation Accord, solidifying a strong security rapport that has developed despite earlier frictions over East Timor. While the specific content of the treaty is private, officials confirm it is influenced by the 1995 security pact inked by then-Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating and Indonesian President Soeharto.
Concerns regarding China’s expanding economic and military footprint in the South China Sea and Pacific region highlight the treaty's strategic significance. Both nations are aware that a security threat to one may affect the other, underscoring the necessity for aligned defence strategies.
Anticipated outcomes of this treaty include strengthened military cooperation, intelligence sharing, and joint strategic planning, further promoting stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
