Aryan Khan has opened up about the tone and content of his directorial debut, The Ba**ds of Bollywood*, responding to early criticism following its release. The series, which premiered last month on Netflix, has consistently been the platform’s most-watched show in India each week. Despite its popularity, some jokes and music tracks have drawn attention for pushing boundaries. In his first public interview, Aryan addressed the feedback and shared how he and his co-writers navigated creative choices.
Aryan, son of Shah Rukh Khan, co-wrote and created the series along with Manav Chauhan and Bilal Siddiqui. The Ba**ds of Bollywood* satirizes the Hindi film industry, delivering inside jokes and playful commentary on Bollywood culture. In an interview with Variety, Aryan revealed that while he received notes on several scenes suggesting they were “too much,” he chose to stand by his creative decisions. He explained, “If you don’t like it, the show may not be for you. But someone else—your 18-year-old kid or your uncle—might enjoy it. The humor is for a variety of audiences.”
He emphasized that the series aims to be self-deprecating rather than disrespectful. “We wanted to joke about the industry from within, without crossing the line of disrespect. Respecting the industry is crucial, and comedy works best when people can laugh at themselves first. We focused on being self-deprecating, not offensive, and ensured the guardrails were self-imposed,” Aryan said.
The show has recently been at the center of controversy due to a defamation suit filed against Netflix and Red Chillies Entertainment by former NCB officer Sameer Wankhede. The suit claims that the series parodies Wankhede and damages his reputation. The Delhi High Court has now issued summons to the makers.
The Ba**ds of Bollywood* features Lakshya, Sahher Bambba, Bobby Deol, Raghav Juyal, Anya Singh, Mona Singh, and Manoj Pahwa in lead roles. Several Bollywood stars also make cameo appearances, including Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Ranveer Singh, and Emraan Hashmi. Aryan’s approach reflects a mix of satire, insider humor, and industry respect, aiming to balance edgy comedy with cultural sensitivity.
The series continues to spark discussion and is notable for its bold creative choices, as well as Aryan Khan’s decision to maintain his vision despite criticism.
