Arsenal reinforced their Premier League lead with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Brentford at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to 18 matches. Mikel Merino’s early 11th-minute header gave Arsenal the lead, but it was a stoppage-time goal by substitute Bukayo Saka that finally sealed the win, ensuring the Gunners maintained a five-point advantage at the top of the table.
Manchester City had briefly narrowed the gap to two points following a thrilling 5-4 win against Fulham on Tuesday, but Arsenal responded calmly to move to 33 points from 14 games, demonstrating their title credentials despite injuries to key defenders William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. Brentford had reason to hope, starting without Arsenal’s injured stars, yet the visitors managed to withstand pressure, though they suffered setbacks with Cristhian Mosquera leaving the pitch injured and Declan Rice hobbling late in the game. Manager Mikel Arteta praised his team’s composure, acknowledging Brentford’s ability to create chaos from even the smallest opportunities.
Elsewhere in the league, Aston Villa climbed to third place with a dramatic 4-3 comeback win over Brighton & Hove Albion. Villa had fallen two goals behind, with Jan Paul van Hecke and Pau Torres putting Brighton 2-0 up. Ollie Watkins spearheaded the fightback, scoring twice before halftime to level the scores. Amadou Onana and Donyell Malen added further goals to secure Villa’s fourth consecutive league victory, though Van Hecke’s late goal for Brighton made it a nervy finish. Manager Unai Emery hailed his team’s resilience and commitment to their game plan.
Chelsea’s title ambitions suffered a setback as they lost 3-1 to Leeds United, dropping to fourth in the table with 24 points. Jaka Bijol and Ao Tanaka put Leeds 2-0 ahead before Pedro Neto pulled one back for Chelsea. However, a defensive lapse allowed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score Leeds’ third, effectively ending any hope of a comeback. Leeds now sit 17th with 14 points, just above West Ham United.
Liverpool, the defending champions, were left frustrated as they drew 1-1 at home against Sunderland. A defensive error by Virgil van Dijk allowed Chemsdine Talbi to give Sunderland the lead in the 67th minute, leaving Liverpool trailing for much of the game. A deflected shot off Nordi Mukiele in injury time salvaged a point, but the result left Liverpool in eighth place, 11 points behind Arsenal, highlighting their ongoing struggles this season. Sunderland came close to snatching a historic win at Anfield, only to be denied by Federico Chiesa clearing a last-minute effort off the line.
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ season woes continued as they fell 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest, remaining at the bottom of the league with just two points from 14 games. Their poor form has left them 12 points adrift of safety, underlining a growing crisis at Molineux.
Arsenal’s solid form, despite injuries, suggests their Premier League title challenge is strengthening, with their disciplined performances ensuring they remain clear at the summit. Aston Villa’s resurgence keeps the battle for European qualification lively, while Chelsea, Liverpool, and other traditional contenders face tough tests as the season progresses. The Premier League continues to deliver drama, goals, and surprises across England, keeping fans engaged with every matchweek.
