Actress Anupama Parameswaran has revealed her experience of enduring online harassment, disclosing that a 20-year-old girl has been disseminating false and harmful content about her. The Karthikeya 2 star shared her distressing experience on Instagram, confirming that she has filed a cyber complaint and will pursue strict legal action against the individual.
In an emotional Instagram post, Anupama described the depth of the cyberbullying she faced.
“An account on Instagram circulated inappropriate and false representations about me, my family, and even tagged my friends and collaborators. These posts contained morphed images and baseless accusations, which was truly distressing,” she expressed.
The actress also mentioned that the perpetrator had set up several fake profiles to propagate damaging content and leave hateful comments on her posts. This ongoing online abuse led her to involve the Cyber Crime Police in Kerala.
Investigation points to a young woman from Tamil Nadu.
According to Anupama, the cyber investigation revealed that the origins of the fake profiles traced back to a 20-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu. While the actress confirmed that legal actions are in progress, she noted she would maintain the young woman's anonymity given her age.
Anupama emphasized that this situation goes beyond personal defamation, highlighting a broader issue of irresponsible actions on social media. She used her platform to alert individuals about the serious repercussions of such behavior.
“Having a smartphone or accessing social media doesn’t grant anyone the right to harass, defame, or spread hatred towards others. Each online action has a consequence, and accountability is inevitable,” she stated.
Actress warns about serious legal repercussions.
Anupama pointed out that being a public figure does not exempt anyone from facing harassment or defamation. She stressed that cyberbullying is a punishable offense and urged individuals to understand the legal ramifications of their digital behavior.
“Being an actor or a public persona doesn’t strip away fundamental rights. Cyberbullying is a punishable offense—accountability is very real,” she concluded her post.
This statement has garnered significant attention from both fans and fellow industry figures, many of whom praised her for taking a firm stance against online harassment and promoting responsible digital conduct.
A troubling trend in the entertainment world
Instances of online abuse targeting celebrities have surged in recent years. Numerous actors, including prominent figures from South Indian cinema, have voiced their experiences of cyberbullying, trolling, and malicious defamation campaigns.
Experts note that while social media enhances connectivity between stars and their audiences, it has also facilitated harassment in anonymity, creating serious emotional and psychological challenges for public figures.
Anupama's future projects
Despite this upsetting incident, Anupama remains dedicated to her thriving film career. She kicked off 2025 with several film releases spanning different languages—Dragon and Bison Kaalamaadan in Tamil, Paradha and Kishkindhapuri in Telugu, along with JSK: Janaki V v/s State of Kerala and The Pet Detective in Malayalam.
Her upcoming Tamil movie titled Lockdown will showcase her versatility and strength as one of South Indian cinema's promising talents.
Anupama Parameswaran's proactive stance against cyberbullying serves as a vital reminder that online harassment has real-life consequences. Through legal measures, she aims to advocate for cyber safety and accountability, irrespective of one's social stature or public visibility.
