In a critical move, OpenAI is propelling its efforts to enhance ChatGPT after CEO Sam Altman declared a “code red.” This urgent shift is prompting a reallocation of teams from various departments to strengthen the platform. The announcement was communicated via a memo and Slack messages this week, marking one of the most significant resource adjustments since some of the firm's key product rollouts.
Sources close to the situation indicate that Altman has instructed team members focused on advertising, autonomous AI technologies, and shopping platforms to pause their current endeavors. Instead, they will contribute to enhancing ChatGPT’s capabilities. Cross-departmental meetings have already commenced as staff transition into new roles to expedite this initiative.
This shift underscores the escalating competitiveness in the AI sector. Recently, Google’s Gemini 3 model garnered praise for its advanced reasoning and coding functionalities. OpenAI's leadership recognizes the need for ChatGPT to evolve more rapidly to maintain its competitive edge, especially considering Google’s Gemini application boasted 650 million users in November.
Despite this, OpenAI maintains a leading position, with ChatGPT now serving around 800 million weekly users and boasting 93 million monthly app downloads—significantly outpacing Gemini's 73 million downloads in October, per Sensor Tower data.
In his memo, Altman emphasized the necessity for enhancements that render ChatGPT more personalized, user-friendly, and powerful. Internally, there are also initiatives underway to refine AI behavior and develop image generation capabilities. Reports indicate that engineers are trialing a new system, codenamed “Garlic,” which has demonstrated promising results in coding and reasoning evaluations.
This high-intensity initiative involves daily coordination meetings led by essential ChatGPT teams, accompanied by temporary personnel transfers from other departments to hasten progress. While OpenAI has yet to comment on the memo itself, senior leadership has repeatedly stated that amplifying ChatGPT’s functionalities and outreach is the company's foremost goal.
As competition increases within the industry, companies like Anthropic have introduced new models designed to automate office and coding processes, seeking the same enterprise clientele that both OpenAI and Google are targeting. As major tech firms intensify their efforts, expectations and stakes continue to rise.
