Abu Dhabi authorities have increased enforcement against the sale of tobacco products in the vicinity of schools, aiming to shield young people from early exposure. Recent operations led to the closure of two retail outlets, 61 official warnings, and 18 recorded breaches for unlawful tobacco sales near educational sites.
The breaches recorded included selling tobacco to underage customers, arranging home delivery of tobacco items, and placing tobacco products on display at checkout counters — all actions that violate UAE legislation.
The Abu Dhabi Registration Authority (ADRA), part of the Department of Economic Development (ADDED), carried out 1,661 on-the-ground visits and ran 21 focused inspection drives across the emirate during the first ten months of 2025. Inspectors concentrated on retail activity involving cigarettes, e-cigarettes and related products around schools.
Under UAE rules, tobacco sales are prohibited within 150 metres of any school. The law also bans sales to minors; offenders risk at least three months in jail, fines starting from AED 15,000, or both. Separately, smoking in the presence of children can lead to a AED 5,000 penalty.
Mohammed Muneef Al Mansoori, Director-General of ADRA, stressed the authority's focus on maintaining a safe commercial environment, enforcing health and safety standards, and protecting consumers. He noted that public awareness efforts and inspections help drive compliance.
Officials say these preventative steps underline Abu Dhabi's commitment to public health and the protection of children, while ensuring businesses adhere to legal responsibilities.
