Abu Dhabi Launches Groundbreaking Modular Smart Vehicles

Abu Dhabi Launches Groundbreaking Modular Smart Vehicles

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Abu Dhabi is making strides in urban mobility with the launch of the world’s first modular smart vehicles. These groundbreaking vehicles can connect and separate according to passenger requirements, revolutionizing road transport in the emirate.

The initiative was revealed during DRIFTx 2025, part of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week, showcasing the city's ambition to become a global leader in advanced mobility solutions. Developed by NExT, these smart vehicles are engineered to meet real-time operational needs, helping reduce congestion and minimize carbon footprints without requiring additional infrastructure.

The modular vehicles are particularly versatile. They can join together to handle larger passenger loads or disconnect for individual travel, enhancing traffic flow and providing efficient solutions for first and last-mile transportation. This adaptive feature is poised to improve road efficiency and encourage sustainable transport practices.

A pilot program is scheduled on Yas Island, in collaboration with Emirates Driving Company (EDC), Liftango, and Paradigma Innovation Hub. This trial will demonstrate the vehicles’ capabilities and set the stage for wider implementation throughout the city.

Beyond immediate transport advantages, these vehicles lay the groundwork for future smart operating systems and autonomous driving technologies, aligning with Abu Dhabi’s long-term objectives of creating an integrated and intelligent transport network.

By introducing modular smart vehicles, Abu Dhabi is not only rethinking road transport but is also establishing a new global benchmark for adaptable, sustainable, and efficient urban mobility.
