UAE Grandmaster Salem Abdulrahman extended his impressive run at the 2025 FIDE World Cup in Goa, India, claiming a hard-fought victory as Black over American talent Abhimanyu Mishra. The result secures Abdulrahman a place in the tournament's Round of 64 and marks a notable achievement on the world stage.
Staged in Goa, the World Cup has attracted more than 200 of the globe’s leading players competing for a prize fund in excess of US$2 million. Abdulrahman’s strategic play and calm technique in the endgame proved decisive against Mishra, who remains recognised as the youngest player to reach Grandmaster status.
The event, which began earlier this month and runs until November 27, features a compact knockout format that demands both consistent preparation and resilience. Abdulrahman’s progress enhances his international profile and underscores the UAE’s growing footprint in elite chess circles.
As the tournament moves deeper into elimination rounds, observers and supporters will watch closely to see whether Abdulrahman can carry this momentum into the later stages.
