Chongqing, China – An 18-year-old student has become a local sensation after heroically saving an elderly couple from a fire in their apartment while dressed only in his underpants. Zhu Ye, who is in his final year at Tongliang No. 2 Secondary School, sprang into action on the evening of October 16 when flames erupted in a neighboring unit, reportedly due to an exploding electric wheelchair battery.
Without a moment's hesitation, Zhu raced over, located the endangered couple, and swiftly guided them away from harm. Unbeknownst to her, the elderly woman had fire on her legs, while the man's wheelchair continued to spark dangerously. Showing remarkable composure, Zhu unplugged the wheelchair's battery, fetched buckets of water from his home, and extinguished the fire. He then alerted the security team within the apartment complex to manage the situation and clear the area.
The couple initially chose to keep the incident secret from their daughter to spare her concern. However, the following day, security personnel informed her about Zhu's brave actions. Grateful for his selflessness, she personally visited Zhu at school with gifts of fruit and milk to express her appreciation. She even humorously remarked that his bravery was so admirable that she would have liked him as a son-in-law if she had a daughter.
Zhu mentioned that, despite feeling frightened, he relied on emergency safety protocols learned in school to make swift choices that ensured the couple's safety. His teacher highlighted that Zhu's courageous deed was unsurprising, as he is known for frequently assisting his peers. In addition to his heroics, Zhu is a talented badminton player, having clinched the district championship for two consecutive years.
His daring act in nothing but underpants has earned him the playful nickname “Underpants Man” among the community, showcasing both his bravery and quick thinking.
Zhu's remarkable story is inspiring his community, illustrating the significance of practical safety training and the incredible bravery of youth who put their lives on the line to save others.
