Chinese President Xi Jinping may visit North Korea as early as next week, according to a report by South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency citing senior government officials. The potential visit is drawing global attention amid renewed diplomatic discussions involving North Korea, China, and the United States.
The report stated that Chinese security and protocol officials were recently seen in Pyongyang, increasing speculation that preparations are already underway for a high-level state visit by Xi. Sources believe the trip could take place either in late May or early June.
According to the report, Xi Jinping is expected to play a diplomatic role between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and former US President Donald Trump. Analysts say Beijing may attempt to ease tensions and encourage dialogue regarding North Korea’s nuclear programme and regional stability.
Donald Trump, who previously held three historic meetings with Kim Jong Un during his first presidential term, has recently indicated he remains open to another meeting with the North Korean leader. Trump has repeatedly stated that he maintains a positive personal relationship with Kim.
South Korea’s Foreign Ministry responded cautiously to the report, saying it hopes exchanges between China and North Korea contribute positively to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. However, officials declined to directly confirm or comment on Xi’s possible visit.
China remains North Korea’s closest economic and political ally. Relations between the two countries slowed during the COVID-19 pandemic due to border restrictions and reduced diplomatic engagement, but both governments have recently shown efforts to strengthen ties once again.
Last year, Kim Jong Un travelled to Beijing and appeared alongside Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin during a major military parade, signalling growing strategic coordination among the three nations.
Experts believe a visit by Xi Jinping to Pyongyang could have major geopolitical significance, especially amid rising global tensions, shifting alliances, and renewed international focus on security issues in East Asia.
