Social media giant X has unveiled a new feature titled "About This Account," aimed at aiding users in confirming the authenticity of profiles. This tool provides essential information such as the account's location, date of creation, and frequency of username changes. Its primary goal is to help users identify fraudulent or deceptive accounts in light of the growing presence of bots and AI-generated profiles.
The feature's rollout comes after extensive discussions within the company. Initially, it was limited to the profiles of X employees, including its product head, Nikita Bier, but is now being made available to a broader user base.
Users can access this feature by clicking the "Joined" date on any X profile, which opens a page containing key details such as:
The date when the account was created
The account's linked location
The total number of username changes and the date of the last modification
How users access X (e.g., via Google Play or the App Store)
This level of transparency empowers users to make informed choices about account legitimacy. For instance, if a profile engages in local discussions but has a recent creation date and a distant location, it could signify a fake or coordinated account.
However, upon its launch, some users experienced inaccuracies, with certain profiles displaying incorrect locations or creation dates. One user pointed out that their profile indicated a U.S. origin when they actually resided in Canada. The company swiftly acknowledged these issues, tracing them back to factors like VPN use or internet service providers such as Starlink impacting the data.
As a result, the feature was temporarily removed for select users; however, it has now been reinstated. X is currently working to rectify these inaccuracies and enhance indicators related to location data impacted by VPNs.
This initiative by X is part of a wider movement toward transparency in social media. Comparable features are already utilized by other platforms, such as Instagram, which provides profile details to help users identify genuine accounts.
In conclusion, the "About This Account" feature seeks to diminish misinformation and bolster confidence in the platform by offering users accessible and clear information regarding their online interactions.
