West Sumatra Limits Retail Chains Entry

West Sumatra Limits Retail Chains Entry

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Authorities in West Sumatra have moved to limit the expansion of major retail chains such as Alfamart and Indomaret in an effort to protect local businesses and strengthen the regional economy.

Officials said the policy is not a formal regulation but rather a mutual agreement aimed at safeguarding micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs). The initiative is designed to ensure that local businesses continue to thrive and contribute to community-level economic activity.

In Padang, authorities have stopped issuing permits for new outlets of large external retail operators. This forms part of a broader strategy to create space for local enterprises to grow and compete more effectively.

As part of the plan, local retail stores will be required to dedicate specific areas, known as “SME corners,” to showcase locally produced goods. At the same time, small business owners are being encouraged to improve product quality, packaging, and compliance with standards such as halal certification and food safety approvals.

Officials believe these measures will help strengthen the local supply chain and increase the visibility of regional products, ultimately supporting sustainable economic development in West Sumatra.
