Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli achieved a significant milestone on Sunday, becoming the fastest player to score 28,000 runs across all international formats. The 37-year-old reached this landmark during the first ODI against New Zealand, placing him second on the all-time run-scorers list behind Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli reached 28,000 runs in his 624th innings, hitting a boundary off New Zealand leg-spinner Adithya Ashok. In comparison, Tendulkar achieved the feat in 644 innings, while Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara did it in 666 innings.
Reflecting on his journey, Kohli described it as “nothing short of a dream come true.” He expressed his gratitude for being able to bring joy to fans through cricket. “I feel truly blessed and grateful for the journey and for the chance to make fans happy,” he said.
Named player of the match for the 45th time, Kohli contributed 93 runs off 91 balls, playing a key role in India’s victory. He stated that he was more focused on the match situation than on personal milestones. “I trusted myself to put the opposition under pressure while playing within my strengths,” he added.
Discussing his approach at the number three position, Kohli said it requires counter-attacking when necessary, while maintaining discipline. He explained that this strategy has helped him form crucial partnerships and positively impact match outcomes.
Kohli also shared that he sends his trophies to his mother in Gurgaon, who loves collecting them. Commenting on the crowd’s reaction as he came to bat after Rohit Sharma’s dismissal, he said he understands their excitement but also empathizes with the players leaving the field.
India captain Shubman Gill praised Kohli’s current form, saying, “These pitches are tough to bat on, but he makes it look effortless. I hope he continues to pile on the runs.” Kohli emphasized that staying focused on the present moment is essential for any athlete.
