Senior officials from Taiwan and the United States recently engaged in high-level discussions to strengthen collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), advanced technology, drone development, and economic security. This ongoing partnership, which began during the Trump administration, highlights the growing strategic ties between the two nations despite the lack of formal diplomatic relations.
The talks were led by Jacob Helberg, U.S. Under Secretary for Economic Affairs, and Taiwan’s Economy Minister Kung Ming-hsin, who is currently visiting the U.S. During the meeting, both sides signed important agreements including the Pax Silica Declaration—a U.S.-led initiative to secure AI and semiconductor supply chains—and a pact focused on enhancing economic security cooperation.
Taiwan, a global powerhouse in semiconductor manufacturing critical for powering AI technologies, was recognized as a key partner in driving the AI revolution forward. The dialogue also addressed supply chain security, drone component certification, and collaboration on critical mineral resources vital for technology production.
Officials discussed efforts to counter economic coercion, improve cooperation in third countries, and remove tax-related barriers to boost investments between the U.S. and Taiwan. Taiwan has long advocated for a bilateral agreement to avoid double taxation, which would significantly encourage cross-border investment.
Beyond economic and technological collaboration, both parties stressed that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are essential for global economic security and prosperity. Additional topics included securing undersea communication cables, advancing low-Earth orbit satellite cooperation, and expanding training programs to develop high-tech talent.
Taiwan has recently accused China of interfering with undersea telecom and internet cables, allegations Beijing denies. To counter potential disruptions, Taiwan is increasing its use of low-Earth orbit satellites to maintain backup communication systems in the event of cable damage.
This strengthened U.S.-Taiwan partnership reflects a strategic move to enhance cooperation in critical technology sectors and infrastructure security amid rising geopolitical challenges.
