Mexico Reassures Its Public on US Military Activities

Mexico Reassures Its Public on US Military Activities

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed concerns this Monday regarding two recent U.S. military activities close to Mexican territory, which heightened tensions following a recent attack on Venezuela.

On Friday, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a warning for aircraft operators to “exercise caution” over the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America because of ongoing “military activities.”

Sheinbaum announced that her government sought written confirmation from the U.S. to ensure that military flights would not intrude over Mexican airspace. The U.S. provided specific coordinates for their operations, and it was clarified by Mexican officials that the FAA advisory did not affect Mexico.

Public concern surged after images of a U.S. military transport plane at Toluca Airport, located about 63 km from Mexico City, were shared widely on social media. Opposition Senator Clemente Castañeda raised questions, asserting that any foreign troop presence needs Senate approval.

Sheinbaum clarified that the plane's presence was a “logistical” activity for training, which did not necessitate Senate approval. The Secretary of Defense authorized it, and this operation adheres to existing bilateral cooperation agreements between Mexico and the U.S.

These developments highlight ongoing tensions, particularly after recent actions taken by the Trump administration concerning Venezuela and renewed statements about possible U.S. military actions against Mexican drug cartels.

Both nations remain committed to collaborating on security matters while respecting Mexico's sovereignty. Officials from both countries are set to convene again this Friday to enhance cooperation targeting cartels and address the unauthorized flow of fentanyl and weapons across their shared border.
