US Sanctions $4.2 Billion Helicopter Package for South Korea

US Sanctions $4.2 Billion Helicopter Package for South Korea

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a significant move to bolster South Korea's defense, the United States has greenlit a substantial military agreement amounting to approximately $4.2 billion. This deal, authorized by the US State Department, encompasses the potential sale of MH-60R multi-mission naval helicopters along with an upgrade initiative for the AH-64E Apache attack helicopters.

As reported by Yonhap News Agency, the proposed Foreign Military Sale (FMS) features the MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, which are valued at roughly $3 billion. These helicopters are specifically designed for a variety of naval tasks, including anti-submarine operations, anti-surface actions, surveillance, search and rescue, among others.

Additionally, the agreement includes a $1.2 billion enhancement program for South Korea's existing fleet of AH-64E Apache helicopters. This upgrade aims to fortify the helicopters’ combat efficiency, 'operational readiness, and advanced attack competencies.

Stating the importance of this sale, the US State Department noted that such transactions will assist South Korea in meeting its defense obligations and strengthen security ties with a vital American ally in the Asia-Pacific region. Approval of this deal arrives amid heightened security anxieties within the Indo-Pacific landscape.

Discussions and approval procedures are now set to advance for finalizing the agreement between the two nations.
