Early on Tuesday, a slight quake registered in Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Siang district. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale occurring at 2:07 am IST.
The earthquake was recorded at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, positioned at coordinates 28.85°N latitude and 95.24°E longitude. NCS shared this information on X, pinpointing the tremor as originating from the Upper Siang area.
So far, local officials have reported no injuries or damages, with monitoring efforts underway to evaluate the seismic event's repercussions. The northeastern region is known for such mild tremors, lying within a high-seismic zone.
Experts emphasize that shallower quakes typically induce more intense ground shaking than those occurring at greater depths. As seismic waves travel shorter distances to the surface, even moderate shocks can lead to perceptible shaking, raising safety concerns based on local population density and existing infrastructure.
This earthquake contributes to ongoing apprehensions regarding seismic activities in Arunachal Pradesh and its neighboring northeastern states, where monitoring bodies regularly document minor to moderate tremors. Officials urge residents to stay updated on earthquake safety protocols.
