A major step toward advancing digital innovation and scientific research was marked in Turkmenistan with the launch of the UNESCO Chair Digital Science at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences. The initiative reflects the country’s growing focus on modernizing its science and education sectors through global partnerships.
The inauguration ceremony, held on April 15, brought together prominent scientists, education leaders, policymakers, and young researchers. The event also featured an exhibition showcasing innovative projects, digital transformation initiatives across industries, and scientific achievements by emerging talents, highlighting the country’s commitment to fostering innovation.
During the ceremony, Chynar Rustemova, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in advancing digital technologies. She noted that strengthening ties with UNESCO remains a strategic priority, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, and open knowledge systems.
The President of the Academy of Sciences, Allaberdi Ashirov, highlighted the historical significance of establishing the new chair, describing it as a reflection of the country’s long-term strategy to integrate innovation into national development. He stressed that the initiative will help bridge the gap between scientific research and its practical application in various sectors.
Further elaborating on the project, Durdymyrat Gadamov, Director of the International Science and Technology Park, explained that the new department will focus on cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, big data analysis, and geospatial technologies. These tools are expected to play a crucial role in improving resource management, enhancing agricultural productivity, and supporting sustainable economic growth.
The department will be led by Nikolai Nikolayev, an experienced specialist in geoinformation systems and land management automation. His leadership is expected to strengthen the department’s research capabilities and expand international collaboration, particularly through networks associated with global organizations.
Established under the UNESCO UNITWIN program, which connects over 1,100 institutions worldwide, the new chair will provide valuable opportunities for young scientists. It will enable them to participate in international research, access advanced knowledge systems, and contribute to global discussions on artificial intelligence ethics and open science.
The initiative is expected to enhance Turkmenistan’s academic and scientific standing on the global stage while empowering a new generation of researchers. By combining technological innovation with international cooperation, the UNESCO Digital Science Chair is set to become a key platform for driving future scientific progress in the country.
