Ukraine Denounces Russian Attacks Amid Ongoing Peace Negotiations in Abu Dhabi

Ukraine Denounces Russian Attacks Amid Ongoing Peace Negotiations in Abu Dhabi

Post by : Saif Rahman

Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, has harshly condemned President Vladimir Putin for the missile and drone assaults on Ukraine's major cities while peace discussions were held in Abu Dhabi. Sybiha labeled the actions as “cynical” and “barbaric,” asserting that Putin's reliability at the peace table is in question.

On Saturday, the attacks targeted Kyiv and Kharkiv, resulting in one fatality and at least 23 injuries. The Ukrainian air force indicated that Russia deployed 375 drones and 21 missiles, mainly aimed at crippling energy infrastructure, causing power outages for hundreds of thousands during harsh winter conditions. Approximately 800,000 residents in Kyiv experienced disruptions. Efforts to restore services are underway.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that it was premature to assess the outcomes of the Abu Dhabi negotiations, insisting that Russia must demonstrate a genuine commitment to peace. The talks are being mediated by the United States, with the aim of resolving the four-year conflict involving Ukraine, Russia, and U.S. officials.

However, a significant hurdle persists with Russia’s insistence on Ukraine ceding its eastern Donbas territories, including Donetsk and Luhansk. Currently, Ukraine retains about 20% of Donetsk, and Zelenskiy has categorically rejected any territorial concessions. Public opinion polls indicate a strong opposition among Ukrainians toward such compromises.

Prior to these attacks, Kyiv had already faced two significant strikes since the year's onset, resulting in widespread outages affecting numerous residential buildings amidst a challenging winter.

While Russia asserts its pursuit of diplomatic avenues, it simultaneously resorts to military aggression whenever discussions falter. Ukraine warns that strikes during peace negotiations jeopardize trust and diminish the prospects for a lasting resolution.

The missile strikes emphasize the complexities surrounding the conflict resolution. As dialogues proceed, global attention is fixed, hoping for an outcome that safeguards Ukraine's sovereignty and the welfare of its citizens.
