UAE Commits $15 Million to Support Sudanese Refugees Amid Ongoing Crisis

UAE Commits $15 Million to Support Sudanese Refugees Amid Ongoing Crisis

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Demonstrating its humanitarian dedication, the United Arab Emirates has pledged $15 million to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) for the aid of refugees and displaced populations in Sudan and neighboring nations. This commitment was announced during the UNHCR Pledging Conference in Geneva for the 2026 Global Appeal.

This action highlights the UAE’s ongoing position as a pivotal donor in addressing global humanitarian emergencies. Jamal Al Musharakh, UAE Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, highlighted the urgent requirement for collaborative efforts amid an escalating global displacement crisis ignited by conflict, persecution, and climate challenges.

Since the eruption of conflict in Sudan in 2023, the UAE has led various aid initiatives, providing nearly $784 million in relief. This positions the nation as the second-largest contributor to Sudan, following the United States, based on data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Over the last decade, total UAE aid to Sudan has exceeded $4.24 billion.

The UNHCR Pledging Conference, held annually at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, gathers member states to declare voluntary contributions for the upcoming year. These donations are crucial for maintaining emergency responses, particularly for at-risk groups such as women and children who suffer the most during displacement crises.

By enhancing reliable and timely humanitarian funding, the UAE’s pledge aims to bolster essential services, including shelter, healthcare, and education, which are vital for stabilizing communities disturbed by relentless conflict.
