In a remarkable showcase of talent, the UAE national athletics team wrapped up their run at the 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships held in Hong Kong, finishing fourth in a fiercely competitive field of 30 nations.
Taking place from May 28 to May 31, this championship gathered some of the best emerging athletes from across Asia. The UAE squad stood out, clinching a total of six medals: five gold and one bronze.
China dominated the medal tally, achieving 25 medals comprising 14 gold, 9 silver, and 2 bronze. India followed in second with 18 medals, which included 9 golds, 5 silvers, and 4 bronzes, while Japan claimed third with 17 medals—5 gold, 5 silver, and 7 bronze.
Major General Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Mur, President of the UAE Athletics Federation, lauded the team's performance, terming their fourth-place finish as a remarkable achievement, especially given the fierce competition they faced.
He noted that the UAE was represented by only 10 athletes—a stark contrast to numerous countries that fielded teams of over 50 competitors. This success speaks volumes about the federation’s training and development programs aimed at discovering and nurturing potential champions.
Dr. Al Mur emphasized that this positive outcome aligns with the federation’s strategy to cultivate athletes through a structured pathway, starting with local competitions and extending to continental challenges and beyond.
He congratulated all medalists for their dedication and commitment, which played a vital role in elevating the UAE's presence on the podium. Additionally, he commended the entire team's technical prowess and efforts during the championship.
The UAE's achievements in Hong Kong underline the burgeoning strength of athletics in the nation, showcasing the bright prospects for its young sports talents.
