In an inspiring display at the 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships held in Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates triumphed by winning two gold medals in the finals of the men's and women's 400-meter sprints, further establishing its status as a burgeoning athletics powerhouse in Asia.
This recent success has boosted the UAE's overall medal count to three in the ongoing competition, which will finish on June 1. The UAE's campaign commenced with a bronze medal courtesy of Salma Haitham Al Marri, who shone in the women's hammer throw.
A highlight of the championships was noted in the men's 400-meter final, where Sulaiman Abdulrahman delivered an outstanding performance, securing gold with a record-breaking time of 44.85 seconds. This remarkable feat not only earned him top honors but also set a new personal best while editing the championship's record history.
Abdulrahman made history by becoming the first athlete at these championships to clock under 45 seconds in the men's 400 meters. His incredible time eclipsed the former championship record of 45.53 seconds, established by Aiyilikesi' er Wumai' er of China in 2024.
The second gold for the UAE was clinched by Aminat Qamar Al-Din, who excelled in the women's 400-meter event, finishing in 52.72 seconds. This victory marked a new personal record for her and underscored the depth of talent within the UAE athletics scene.
Major General Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Mur, President of the UAE Athletics Federation, commended the athletes for their remarkable achievements, stating that these gold medals signify the nation’s strategic investment in sports and athlete development.
He emphasized that these results reflect the steadfast backing from UAE leadership for the sports sector, complimented by the supportive roles of the National Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sports in fostering a new generation of elite athletes.
Al Mur further noted that the success in Hong Kong exemplifies the federation’s ongoing commitment to developing young talents capable of competing effectively on global stages.
With more events approaching before the championship’s conclusion, the UAE team is poised to build on its current achievements and enhance an already fruitful medal tally that highlights the nation’s growing prominence in Asian athletics.
