The UAE national team qualified for the semi-finals of the Arab Cup Qatar 2025 after a thrilling win over defending champions Algeria on penalties. The quarter-final match was played on Friday evening at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor and ended 1-1 after regular and extra time before the UAE won 7-6 in the shootout.
The first half was cautious, with both teams focusing on defense and physical play. Algeria had slightly better control of the ball but struggled to create clear chances. Two Algerian goals were ruled out for offside, while the UAE’s attack found it difficult to break through Algeria’s strong defensive line.
The second half started at a faster pace. Algeria took the lead in the 46th minute when Adel Boulbina scored after following up a rebound from the UAE goalkeeper. The goal opened up the game, with both teams pushing forward in search of more chances.
The UAE responded with confidence and equalised in the 64th minute. A well-organised attack from the left side ended with Bruno de Oliveira scoring from close range. After the goal, the UAE increased pressure, while Algeria relied on quick counter-attacks to threaten the Emirati goal.
Extra time saw chances at both ends, but strong goalkeeping prevented any further goals. Both teams came close, yet neither could find the winning goal, forcing the match to be decided by a penalty shootout.
UAE goalkeeper Hamad Al Muqbali played a decisive role by saving two penalties. The UAE secured a 7-6 win and will now face Morocco in the semi-finals next Monday, marking a historic moment for Emirati football.
