U.S. President Donald Trump has alleged that Ukraine is the barrier to a potential peace agreement in the ongoing conflict with Russia. In an exclusive Reuters interview, Trump claimed that while Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to a deal, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is showing reluctance.
This statement contrasts sharply with the views of European allies, who contend that Moscow lacks a sincere desire to end the almost four-year war.
“I think he’s ready to make a deal,” Trump remarked about Putin. “I think Ukraine is less ready to make a deal.” When questioned about the stalled negotiations led by the U.S., he pointedly replied: “Zelenskiy.”
The relationship between Trump and Zelenskiy has been notably strained. Although they appeared to find common ground during Trump’s first year in office, his latest comments suggest a resurgence of frustration towards the Ukrainian leader.
Negotiations spearheaded by the U.S. have concentrated on establishing security assurances for Ukraine in a post-war scenario, aiming to deter future Russian aggression. There have been discussions about Ukraine potentially relinquishing some territory in the eastern Donbas region, although Ukrainian officials firmly reject any notion of territorial concessions.
Recent dialogue has involved U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. While U.S. efforts continue, European officials express skepticism about Putin’s willingness to agree to some proposed terms.
Trump also indicated a possibility of meeting Zelenskiy at the upcoming World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, next week. “I would—if he’s there,” Trump noted. “I’m going to be there.”
When pressed about Zelenskiy’s hesitance in the negotiations, Trump refrained from elaborating, merely stating: “I just think he’s, you know, having a hard time getting there.” In contrast, Zelenskiy has publicly rejected any negotiations involving territorial concessions, referencing Ukraine’s constitution.
The war in Ukraine, which commenced nearly four years ago, remains the largest land conflict in Europe since World War Two. Trump’s remarks underscore a fundamental divergence between his administration’s strategy and that of various European allies, complicating already delicate peace discussions.
Analysts suggest any pathway toward peace will demand concessions from all parties, yet both Moscow and Kyiv appear resolute in their positions. The global community watches intently, longing for a resolution to end the ongoing bloodshed and devastation.
