Greater Noida: In a sorrowful turn of events, Yuvraj Mehta, a 27-year-old software engineer, lost his life when his vehicle fell into a rainwater-filled pit in Greater Noida this past weekend.
Mehta, who was commuting home to Tata Eureka Park in Noida Sector 150 from his workplace in Gurugram, encountered a dense fog that caused him to lose control of his Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. His car jumped over a drain and landed in a pit approximately 50 feet deep, filled with rainwater. Local authorities have indicated that the pit lacked any safety barricades or warning signs.
In a desperate situation, Mehta was able to climb onto the roof of his car and called his father for assistance, stating, “Papa, I am stuck, the car has fallen into the drain.”
Rescue teams from various agencies, including the police, fire services, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), arrived promptly but faced delays due to the thick fog. Despite utilizing ropes, cranes, and ladders, the rescue efforts did not succeed in reaching him in time.
Mehta remained atop his vehicle for around 90 minutes until it finally submerged. His body was subsequently retrieved using a boat.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident and have issued warnings to the public regarding unmarked pits and heightened visibility issues during foggy weather.
