Dubai's RTA Launches Traffic Enhancement Projects at 28 Sites This Summer

Dubai's RTA Launches Traffic Enhancement Projects at 28 Sites This Summer

Post by : Badri Ariffin

This summer, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is set to implement traffic enhancement initiatives at 28 sites in the emirate from July through September 2026. The primary goals are to alleviate traffic congestion, boost road safety, enhance connectivity among residential communities, schools, and development zones, as well as support Dubai’s ongoing urban expansion. The initiatives encompass four school zones, three development areas, and 21 additional locations throughout Dubai.

To optimize construction, the authority scheduled these operations during the summer break when traffic volume is lower, speeding up the process while minimizing inconvenience for drivers.

Emirates Road Upgrade to Decrease Travel Time by 25% During Peak Hours

Among the highlights of this initiative is the expansion of Emirates Road, a vital thoroughfare linking Dubai to neighboring emirates. The project will add two new lanes over a 5-kilometer stretch starting from the Emirate of Sharjah extending towards Al Amardi Street.

RTA reports that this road experiences heavy congestion at peak times, with the expansion set to cut journey times by 25%, thus easing traffic flow on one of the busiest routes in Dubai.

Traffic Enhancements at Key Roads and Intersections

The traffic improvement strategy also includes significant upgrades to major roads and intersections across Dubai.

Current work includes the intersection of Trade Centre Street and Marasi Drive in Business Bay, alongside enhancements on Latifa Bint Hamdan Street near Al Quoz Industrial Area and Ras Al Khor Road approaching Al Khail Road.

These upgrades are meant to improve intersection efficiency, streamline traffic, and manage increased vehicle volume in critical urban areas.

Residential Zones to Benefit from Added Traffic Lanes

The RTA is introducing upgrades in residential neighborhoods to expand road capacity and minimize delays for commuters.

The developments include:

  • Adding a lane at the Al Khawaneej Street and Al Amardi Street intersection.
  • Widening the right-turn from Ras Al Khor Road to two lanes towards Dubai–Al Ain Road.
  • Increasing lane width on Algeria Street in Al Mizhar 4 prior to the entrance of labor accommodations.

The authority anticipates these improvements will mitigate congestion, enhance vehicle flow, and improve overall traffic conditions.

New Parking Solutions Planned for Schools in Dubai

In preparation for the upcoming 2026 academic year, RTA is set to construct new parking facilities for the Zayed Educational Complex in Al Mizhar 2 and additional spaces for Horizon International School in Umm Al Sheif.

These new parking solutions aim to enhance traffic management around schools, facilitate smoother drop-off and pick-up operations, and reduce congestion during peak school hours while bolstering road safety.

Traffic Data and Community Feedback Informed Project Location Choices

The 28 locations for projects were determined after extensive technical and field studies, which included examining historical traffic trends, field survey results, intelligent transport data, surveillance camera insights, and public feedback through various channels.

Utilizing traffic data coupled with community input, RTA aims to deliver timely and effective road improvements that shorten travel times, enhance traffic efficiency, bolster road safety, and improve the overall travel experience for residents and visitors in Dubai.

This summer initiative is part of RTA's strategic plan to modernize Dubai’s transportation infrastructure and align the road network with the emirate’s ongoing growth.
